Satisha Puja is a traditional Hindu ritual observed in certain regions of India, primarily to honor and seek blessings from the deity Satisha or Sati Devi, who is revered for protection, well-being, and the fulfillment of desires. The success and sanctity of this puja depend greatly on the proper arrangement and use of the required samagri (puja materials), each with its own symbolic meaning and spiritual purpose. Key among the items is the idol or image of Satisha Devi, placed at the center of the puja setup, adorned with fresh flowers, vermilion (kumkum), and turmeric (haldi), symbolizing purity and devotion. A kalash (sacred pot) filled with clean water, mango leaves, and topped with a coconut is placed nearby to represent the presence of divinity. The use of akshata (rice mixed with turmeric), chandan (sandalwood paste), and ashtagandha (a blend of eight fragrant powders) is common during the offering process.
The puja thali is prepared with essentials like camphor, incense sticks (agarbatti), ghee lamp (diya), and dhoop, all used to purify the environment and invoke divine energy. Fruits, especially bananas, coconuts, and seasonal varieties, are offered as symbols of prosperity and gratitude. Sweets like laddoos or kheer may also be included as naivedya (food offering) to the deity. Betel leaves and nuts, cloves, and cardamom are often part of the traditional offerings, used for both their fragrance and auspicious value. The presence of mouli (sacred red thread) is important; it is either tied to the kalash or around the devotee’s wrist as a mark of protection.
Holy water (Ganga jal) is sprinkled to purify the surroundings, while flowers like marigold, jasmine, and lotus are used for decoration and offerings. In some regions, red cloth, mirror, and bangles are offered to the goddess as symbols of femininity and marital bliss. A conch (shankh) may be blown to signal the start of the ritual and invite divine vibrations. If a havan (fire ritual) is part of the puja, havan kund, wood, and havan samagri are also required. All these items, arranged with devotion and care, create a spiritually charged atmosphere, ensuring the ritual is performed with the intended sanctity and devotion to receive the full blessings of Satisha Devi.
