Varalakshmi Puja Samagri –
Varalakshmi Puja is a highly auspicious Hindu ritual observed by married women, especially in South India, to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and well-being. The success and sanctity of the Varalakshmi Puja depend not only on devotion but also on the proper gathering and use of traditional puja samagri (ritual items). The most important item is the Varalakshmi idol or kalash—usually a brass or silver pot filled with water, rice, coins, or grains, symbolizing abundance. The kalash is decorated with mango leaves, and a coconut smeared with turmeric is placed on top, signifying the divine presence of the goddess. A sacred thread (mouli or raksha) is tied around the neck of the pot, and the idol is adorned with a saree or silk cloth, gold ornaments, and fresh flowers like lotus, jasmine, and marigold.
The puja thali includes essential items such as kumkum (vermilion), turmeric, chandan (sandalwood paste), akshata (rice grains mixed with turmeric), betel leaves and betel nuts, incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor, and a ghee diya (lamp). Fruits, coconuts, and various sweets, especially traditional offerings like obbattu, laddu, modak, or payasam, are prepared and placed before the goddess as naivedyam (offering). A mirror, comb, bangles, and other auspicious items of womanhood (sowbhagya dravya) are also offered, as the puja is centered around the well-being of family and marital bliss.
A small bell, conch, and holy water (Ganga jal) are used during the chanting and rituals. Many also keep a picture or idol of Goddess Lakshmi, along with coins or currency, to symbolize wealth. Flowers and garlands are used liberally for decoration, and rangoli is drawn at the entrance of the house to welcome the goddess. If a havan or Lakshmi Sahasranama Archana is performed, havan samagri and flowers for each name chant are also arranged. After the puja, the mangalsutra or sacred thread is tied on the wrists of the women participating. All the items collectively ensure that the puja is conducted with devotion, purity, and completeness, bringing peace, prosperity, and happiness to the household.
