Nirjala Ekadashi Puja Samagri: Rituals for Spiritual Growth and Purification
Nirjala Ekadashi, a significant fasting day in the Hindu calendar, is observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha. Unlike other Ekadashi observances, Nirjala Ekadashi is a day of complete fasting, where devotees refrain from consuming both food and water, seeking the blessings of Lord Vishnu for spiritual growth, purification, and liberation from sins. The ritualistic significance of Nirjala Ekadashi is deep, and the puja samagri (ritual items) associated with this observance plays an essential role in helping devotees carry out the puja with devotion and reverence.
The Nirjala Ekadashi Puja Samagri typically includes a variety of sacred items, each symbolizing purity, devotion, and the connection between the devotee and the divine. Puja Thali, the main plate used for holding all ritual items, serves as the center of the puja offerings. The most important item for this puja is a picture or idol of Lord Vishnu, as he is the deity worshipped during Ekadashi for his ability to remove obstacles and grant salvation. This idol is often placed on a clean cloth or platform, and the devotee offers prayers to invoke Lord Vishnu’s divine presence.
Incense sticks (agarbattis) are burned during the puja to purify the surroundings and create a peaceful, sacred atmosphere. The diya (lamp), typically made of oil or ghee, is lit as an offering to Lord Vishnu, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the arrival of divine light. Flowers, especially marigolds or lotus, are placed in front of Lord Vishnu’s idol to show respect and devotion, as flowers are symbolic of purity and beauty.
Fruits, typically bananas or apples, are an essential offering for the deity, symbolizing the fruits of life and abundance. As Nirjala Ekadashi involves fasting without food or water, fruits are often used as an offering in the ritual before being later shared as prashad. Rice and wheat grains are used in rituals like making an offering of grain to the deity, symbolizing prosperity and nourishment.
Roli (vermilion) and chawal (rice) are applied to the idol of Lord Vishnu during the puja, along with a tilak on the forehead of the devotee to mark auspiciousness. Kumkum or sindoor is sometimes offered as a symbol of auspiciousness and to mark a spiritually transformative day. In addition, holy books, such as the Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Sahasranama, are recited to invoke the blessings of Lord Vishnu and to deepen the spiritual connection.
Finally, water is used in the ritual to purify and sanctify the space, as the devotee refrains from drinking water throughout the day. The samagri used for Nirjala Ekadashi Puja is designed to help the devotee focus entirely on the spiritual aspect of the day while performing the ritual with utmost reverence.
