Mundan Puja Samagri: The Sacred Essentials for a Child’s First Hair-Cutting Ceremony

Mundan Puja, also known as Chudakarana, is a significant Hindu ritual that marks the first hair-cutting ceremony of a child, usually performed during infancy or early childhood. This ceremony holds deep spiritual and cultural meaning, symbolizing the purification of the child’s body and soul and the shedding of past karmic influences carried from previous lives. The ritual is usually performed at a sacred place, like a temple, pilgrimage site, or at home under the guidance of a priest. For the puja to be carried out effectively, the arrangement of proper Mundan Puja Samagri is essential. Each item in the samagri list holds symbolic and spiritual importance, and together they help create an atmosphere of sanctity, devotion, and protection for the child.

The main samagri includes a puja thali, roli, chawal (unbroken rice), haldi (turmeric), kumkum, sandalwood paste, and sacred water from the Ganga, if available. These are used in invoking the blessings of the deities and in preparing the child for the mundan. A havan kund or sacred fire setup is also arranged, along with samidha (wood sticks) and ghee for performing the homa or fire offering, which purifies the environment and attracts divine energy. Fresh flowers and garlands are offered to deities and the child, symbolizing purity and auspiciousness. Incense sticks (agarbatti) and diya (oil lamp) are used to purify the surroundings and create a divine ambiance.

The razor or scissors, which are the tools for hair cutting, are cleaned and kept on the puja thali after being blessed during the rituals. A coconut, often used to signify the breaking of ego and obstacles, is broken during the ceremony. Honey, ghee, curd, and milk may be used in the ritual bath (abhishek) for the child after the mundan. A new set of clothes is kept ready for the child to wear after the ceremony, representing a fresh start. Dry fruits, sweets, and prashad are offered to the deities and then distributed among guests and family members.
