Kanwar Puja Samagri: The Sacred Essentials of a Devotional Journey
Kanwar Puja, also known as Kanwar Yatra or Kanwar Mela, is a significant Hindu religious ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva, especially observed during the holy month of Shravan (July-August). Devotees, known as Kanwariyas, undertake a pious journey on foot to fetch the sacred water from the Ganges River, which is then offered to Lord Shiva at a local temple or a specific pilgrimage site like Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Sultanganj. This ritual symbolizes devotion, purity, and the surrender of one’s ego to the supreme power. To perform Kanwar Puja properly, devotees require a specific set of items, collectively called Kanwar Puja Samagri, which holds deep spiritual significance.
The Kanwar (a decorated bamboo pole) is the most essential item, from which the ritual derives its name. It is usually decorated with colorful cloth, flowers, beads, and sacred symbols. Two water pots (generally copper or earthen) are tied on both ends of the Kanwar to carry the Ganga Jal (holy water). These pots must be handled with utmost care and respect, as the water is considered pure and divine.
Key samagri used in the puja includes bel patra (bilva leaves), which are offered to the Shiva Linga and are considered highly sacred. Datura flowers, akwan flowers, and white lotus are also commonly offered to Lord Shiva. Other basic ingredients include sandalwood paste (chandan), incense sticks (agarbatti), camphor (kapoor) for aarti, and ghee or mustard oil for lighting the diya or deepak.
Roli, chawal (rice), haldi (turmeric), and kumkum are also required for performing the puja rituals. These are used for tilak, marking the sacred space, and decorating the Shiva Linga. Some devotees also include sacred ash (vibhuti or bhasm), which is applied to the forehead or offered during the puja. Fruits, coconut, and sweets like peda or laddus are used as prasad after the offering. A kalash, or holy pot, filled with clean water, is kept during the puja as a representation of divine energy.
The samagri not only enhances the sanctity of the puja but also symbolizes the Kanwariya’s devotion, discipline, and sacrifice. Each item in the Kanwar Puja Samagri reflects purity, simplicity, and the ultimate goal of uniting with the divine through penance and unwavering faith in Lord Shiva.
