Kal Bhairav Puja Samagri
Kal Bhairav Puja is a powerful ritual dedicated to Lord Kal Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with protection, time, and destruction of evil forces. This puja is especially significant for removing negative energies, overcoming fears, and seeking divine protection. Performing Kal Bhairav Puja requires specific samagri (ritual items), each holding symbolic and spiritual significance. The primary samagri includes a clean copper or brass idol or image of Kal Bhairav, which is placed on a sanctified platform. The puja begins with gangajal (holy water) for purification, followed by offerings of akshat (unbroken rice), roli (vermilion), sindoor (saffron or red turmeric), and haldi (turmeric). Flowers, especially red hibiscus and marigolds, are essential as they are considered dear to Lord Bhairav. Scented dhoop (incense), deep (lamp) with mustard oil, and camphor are lit to invite divine presence and remove negativity from the surroundings.
Other essential items include belpatra (bilva leaves), black sesame seeds, mustard seeds, and black gram (urad dal), all of which are believed to please Lord Bhairav and ward off malevolent energies. Offering bhang (a preparation of cannabis), alcohol, or specific food items like coconut, bananas, or kachori is traditional in some regions, particularly in temples. However, in household pujas, symbolic offerings are generally preferred. A red or black cloth is used to cover the idol or as a base for the puja setup. Additionally, panchamrit (a sacred mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar) is used for abhishekam (ritual bathing of the deity).
A Kal Bhairav Yantra, if available, is placed near the deity to enhance the spiritual vibrations. Sacred mantras such as the Kal Bhairav Ashtakam or the Bhairav Beej Mantra (“Om Hreem Batukaya Apad Uddharanaya Kuru Kuru Batukaya Hreem Phat Swaha”) are chanted using a Rudraksha or black onyx mala. Devotees may also include sacred scriptures like the Shiv Purana or Bhairav Chalisa during the ritual. Finally, prasad is distributed among devotees. Each item in the Kal Bhairav Puja Samagri contributes to the sanctity and potency of the ritual, ensuring that the devotee receives divine blessings, protection from harm, and success in overcoming life’s obstacles. This puja, especially performed on Kalashtami or during midnight hours, is considered highly auspicious for spiritual growth and fearlessness.
