Dhanteras Puja Samagri: Essential Items for Wealth and Prosperity

Dhanteras, celebrated on the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, marks the beginning of the festive season and is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of health, and Lord Kubera, the god of wealth. It is believed that performing Dhanteras Puja brings prosperity, health, and wealth into one’s life. The ritual is primarily focused on inviting wealth and ensuring the well-being of the family. The Dhanteras Puja Samagri (ritual items) are carefully chosen to facilitate a smooth and auspicious ceremony, ensuring the blessing of both material and spiritual wealth.

At the heart of the puja is a Puja Thali, a decorated plate that holds all the essential items required for the ritual. One of the most important items is a diya (lamp), usually made of clay, which is lit during the puja to symbolize the removal of darkness and the arrival of divine light and prosperity. Incense sticks (agarbattis) are burned to purify the environment, inviting positive energies and establishing a sacred atmosphere. The aroma of incense is believed to drive away negativity and enhance the ritual’s spiritual power.

Lord Dhanvantari’s idol is typically placed on the puja altar along with Lord Kubera’s idol or pictures, as both deities are worshiped on this day for good health and wealth. Roli and chawal (rice) are used to apply a tilak to the deities’ idols and the forehead of family members, marking them with blessings for prosperity. Flowers, particularly marigolds, are offered to the deities as a gesture of respect and love. These flowers are also used to decorate the puja area to enhance the ritual’s auspiciousness.

Fruits and sweets are essential offerings during Dhanteras Puja. Sweets such as laddus, barfis, and modaks are offered as prashad (sacred food) to the deities, symbolizing the sweetness of life and the hope for a prosperous year ahead. Gold and silver coins or jewelry are often placed in the puja thali as a symbolic representation of wealth. People also buy new utensils or precious metals like silver and gold, which is believed to attract prosperity.

Water is used for purification, while sugar and rice grains are also placed on the thali for blessings of abundance and harmony. Additionally, kumkum or sindoor is applied to the deity’s idol to enhance the ritual’s auspiciousness. Holy scriptures or mantras like the Dhanteras Stotra or Kubera Ashtakshara Mantra are recited during the puja to invoke the blessings of the gods.

These items create a sanctified atmosphere for the Dhanteras Puja, helping to attract wealth, health, and success for the year ahead.
