Ganga Maa Puja Samagri: Sacred Offerings for Worship of the Divine River

Ganga Maa Puja is a revered ritual in Hinduism, performed to honor the sacred river Ganga, regarded as a divine mother who purifies the soul and washes away sins. The puja is conducted with deep devotion, especially on occasions like Ganga Dussehra, Ganga Saptami, and during pilgrimages to holy places like Haridwar, Varanasi, and Gangotri. To perform the Ganga Maa Puja properly, specific samagri (ritual items) are required to show respect and devotion and to invoke the divine blessings of the goddess. Each item in the samagri holds a special spiritual significance and contributes to the sanctity of the worship.

The main samagri includes a clean copper or brass kalash (water pot), which is often filled with Ganga jal (holy water from the Ganges) and symbolizes life and purity. Fresh flowers, especially white and red lotuses or marigolds, are offered to the goddess as a symbol of devotion and beauty. Sandalwood paste (chandan) and kumkum are applied to the idol or image of Ganga Maa and to the devotees as a mark of reverence and auspiciousness. Rice grains (akshat) are also essential, used for making symbolic offerings and indicating purity and abundance.

Incense sticks (agarbatti) and camphor (kapoor) are lit to purify the atmosphere and create a spiritual ambiance during the puja. Ghee diya (oil lamp) is lit as a representation of divine light and knowledge. Fruits such as bananas, apples, and coconuts are offered as a mark of respect and gratitude for nature’s bounty. Sweets, especially those made of milk like peda or kheer, are offered as prasad and later distributed among devotees. Betel leaves, cloves, cardamom, and supari (areca nut) are also included, signifying hospitality to the deity.

Other items may include a picture or idol of Ganga Maa, often depicted riding a crocodile with a water pot in hand, a white cloth for covering the deity, and sacred threads (mauli or kalava) to tie around the wrist as a protective blessing. Devotees may also keep Ganga Stotra or Durga Saptashati texts to recite hymns and mantras during the puja.
