Vishwakarma Puja Samagri: Celebrating the Divine Architect of the Universe
Vishwakarma Puja is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect and craftsman of the gods. This puja is celebrated primarily by artisans, engineers, workers, and manufacturers to seek blessings for their tools, machines, and workplace. The ritual, typically performed on the 17th of September or the day after Diwali, is an expression of gratitude to Lord Vishwakarma for his contribution to creation and craftsmanship. The Vishwakarma Puja samagri plays an important role in ensuring that the ritual is performed properly, creating a space for divine blessings to enhance productivity, success, and safety in the workplace.
The essential items required for Vishwakarma Puja include a Puja Thali, which holds the various offerings and ritual materials. One of the most important items is Lord Vishwakarma’s idol or picture, which is placed in the center of the workspace or workshop. The idol is often decorated with garlands of flowers, particularly marigolds, which are used to honor the deity and invoke auspicious blessings. Incense sticks (agarbattis) are lit to purify the space and create a peaceful, sacred atmosphere conducive to worship.
A diya (lamp) is placed in front of the idol to symbolize the removal of darkness and the arrival of knowledge and enlightenment. The roli and chawal (rice) are used to apply a tilak on the forehead of the idol as well as on the worshiper’s forehead, symbolizing the blessings of Lord Vishwakarma for success and protection from harm. Fruits such as bananas, pomegranates, and apples are offered as a symbol of abundance and prosperity.
In addition, tools, machines, and vehicles used in the workplace are cleaned and decorated as part of the ritual. They are presented before the deity for blessing and protection. Offering sweets, like laddus or barfis, to Lord Vishwakarma is an integral part of the puja as they represent a sweet and prosperous life. Water is poured as an offering to purify the space and ensure the ritual’s sanctity.
For chanting the puja, the Vishwakarma Ashtakshara Mantra or other sacred prayers dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma are recited. Kumkum or sindoor is also used for marking auspiciousness and for the tilak ceremony. Rice grains are offered along with sugar as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.
