Vat Savitri Puja is an important Hindu ritual observed by married women, particularly in northern and western India, to seek the well-being and longevity of their husbands. The puja is dedicated to Goddess Savitri, who is revered for her devotion and power in securing the life of her husband, Satyavan. The Vat Savitri Puja Samagri Kit contains all the essential items required to conduct the puja with reverence and ensure its spiritual efficacy.
At the heart of the ritual is the Vat tree (Banyan tree), around which the puja is performed. A sacred thread (mouli) is tied around the tree or around the participant’s wrist, symbolizing protection and divine blessings. The puja thali is prepared with a variety of ingredients, such as kumkum (vermilion), turmeric (haldi), and chandan (sandalwood paste). These are used for applying to the idol or image of Goddess Savitri and other deities invoked during the ritual. Akshata (rice mixed with turmeric) is also offered during the prayers, symbolizing purity and auspiciousness.
The kalash (sacred pot) is an important part of the setup. Filled with water, it is adorned with mango leaves and a coconut, representing the presence of divinity and prosperity. Ganga jal (holy water) may be used to purify the surroundings and invoke blessings. Incense sticks (agarbatti), dhoop, and camphor are lit to purify the environment, and ghee lamps (diyas) are placed near the Vat tree and puja area to invite divine light and protection. Fresh flowers, especially marigolds or lotus, are used to decorate the tree, idol, and puja space, enhancing the atmosphere with their fragrance and beauty.
Fruits such as bananas, coconuts, and pomegranates are offered as part of the naivedya (food offering) to the goddess. The offering of betel leaves and betel nuts is also customary in this puja, symbolizing respect and devotion. Sweets, like laddoos or kheer, are prepared and offered to the goddess, representing the sweetness of life and marriage.
If the ritual includes a havan, the havan samagri, which contains a mix of herbs and other sacred ingredients, is used for the fire offerings. The puja kit also includes holy scriptures or mantras for chanting, often focused on Goddess Savitri’s virtues and her role in protecting married life. All these elements combine to create an atmosphere of reverence, ensuring that the Vat Savitri Puja is performed with full devotion and spiritual significance.
