Puri Jagannath Puja is a revered ritual dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu, primarily celebrated in Odisha, India, and other parts of the world. The puja requires a specific set of samagri (ritual items) to ensure its success and sanctity. The most important element of the ritual is the idol or image of Lord Jagannath, which is placed at the center of the puja area, often surrounded by images of his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra. The puja thali includes essential offerings such as kumkum (vermilion), turmeric (haldi), sandalwood paste (chandan), and akshata (rice mixed with turmeric), used to anoint the deities and signify auspiciousness.
A kalash (sacred pot) filled with clean water is placed in the puja setup, symbolizing purity and inviting divine blessings. The coconut placed on the kalash represents the deity’s presence and is often broken as part of the ritual offering. Flowers, especially marigolds, jasmine, or lotus, are offered to Lord Jagannath to enhance the spiritual atmosphere and seek blessings for prosperity. Fruits, including bananas, coconuts, and seasonal varieties, are placed as offerings for the divine.
Incense sticks (agarbatti), dhoop, and camphor are lit to purify the space and create a divine aroma during the puja. A ghee lamp (diya) is essential in Jagannath Puja, representing the light of knowledge and wisdom that dispels darkness. Betel leaves and betel nuts are used as offerings to honor the deity, and cloves and cardamom are also added for their fragrance and auspicious qualities.
A significant part of the Puri Jagannath Puja is the bhog (food offerings). Special prasadam such as pitha (cakes), laddu, kheer, and khichdi are prepared for Lord Jagannath, which are later distributed as prasad to the devotees. Holy water or Ganga jal is used for purifying the ritual items and offering to the deity. Mouli (sacred red thread) is tied to invoke divine protection, and sacred scriptures or mantras are chanted throughout the puja, invoking Lord Jagannath’s blessings.
In some cases, if the puja includes a havan, the required havan samagri such as herbs, wood, and ghee is prepared. The collective use of these items during Puri Jagannath Puja ensures a divine connection and brings prosperity, good health, and happiness to the devotees.
