SHITLA ASHTAMI PUJA SAMAGRI

Sheetala Ashtami is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Sheetala, who is believed to protect devotees from diseases, particularly those related to heat, such as smallpox and chickenpox. The puja, performed on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Chaitra, involves various rituals and offerings that require specific puja samagri, each carrying its own spiritual significance.

The central item for Sheetala Ashtami Puja is the idol or picture of Goddess Sheetala, often placed on a clean, sacred platform. The goddess is typically depicted with a broom, symbolizing her power to cure diseases, and sometimes with a bowl of cooling water, signifying healing. Fresh flowers like marigolds and jasmine are used to adorn the idol, symbolizing purity and devotion. A significant part of the ritual is the cold food offerings, as Goddess Sheetala is believed to be pleased with food that has been left to cool overnight. These offerings can include boiled riceflatbreads (roti)sweet treats like laddoos or kheer, and yogurt. These foods, which should be completely cooled, represent the cooling and healing properties of the goddess.

For the ritual itself, water is an essential item, often placed in a kalash (sacred pot) along with mango leaves and a coconut on top to invite divine blessings. Kumkum (vermilion)turmeric (haldi), and sandalwood paste are used for applying to the goddess’s idol and for making offerings, as they are considered auspicious and purifying. Betel leaves and betel nuts are also placed before the idol, symbolizing respect and devotion. Incense sticks (agarbatti) and dhoop are lit to purify the space, while a ghee lamp (diya) is kept burning to symbolize the presence of divine light.

Holy water (Ganga jal), if available, is used to purify the surroundings and the puja materials. Red thread (mouli) is often tied around the idol or around the devotee’s wrist for protection and good health. Fruits, particularly bananasapples, or pomegranates, are offered to the goddess as symbols of prosperity and health. In some traditions, clovescardamom, and sugar are also placed as offerings to enhance the sweetness and purity of the prayer.

The puja may include chanting specific mantras dedicated to Goddess Sheetala, invoking her blessings for health, healing, and the well-being of the family. The correct use of these items creates a spiritually charged atmosphere, ensuring the completion of the Sheetala Ashtami puja with devotion and sincerity.
