Mangal Puja, a sacred Hindu ritual, is performed to seek blessings for prosperity, health, and success. It is a significant puja, typically carried out during auspicious occasions like the beginning of new ventures, festivals, or in honor of deities. The puja is done with a specific set of items, collectively known as the “Mangal Puja Samagri,” which is essential for performing the ritual. These items symbolize various aspects of divine power, auspiciousness, and the natural elements, ensuring that the prayer is effective and that it creates a positive energy flow.

The primary items in Mangal Puja Samagri include a copper or silver plate or a brass thali, which serves as the base for placing all offerings. The plate is often filled with rice grains or flour to create a soft base for the other items, which are considered symbols of life and wealth. Kumkum (a red powder), which is used for marking the forehead, is another essential component. It represents the energy of the deity being worshipped, especially the goddess Lakshmi. Haldi (turmeric) is also vital, symbolizing purity, auspiciousness, and the power to remove negative energy. Turmeric is often applied to the idol or deity being worshipped, as well as to the worshippers’ bodies to invoke blessings.

Flowers, particularly marigolds, are offered during the ritual as they symbolize both beauty and devotion. Agarbattis (incense sticks) are lit to purify the space, create a fragrant atmosphere, and invite divine presence. Deepak (oil lamp) or a diya is another crucial item that is lit to dispel darkness and bring in positivity. Ghee (clarified butter) is used for offering sacrifices into the fire, which represents the transformation of the material into the divine. Coconut, considered sacred, is often placed as an offering to the gods, symbolizing the individual’s pure heart and devotion. Sugar, honey, panchamrit (a mixture of milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar), and betel leaves along with betel nuts are used as offerings to complete the ritual. Puja thali also includes items like sweets and fruits, which symbolize prosperity and the joy of receiving blessings from the deity.

In addition to these traditional items, water, especially sacred river water like Ganga Jal, is also used to purify and sanctify the worship space. The overall collection of Mangal Puja Samagri ensures that the ritual is carried out according to the proper customs, inviting divine blessings for happiness, wealth, and protection. The ritual is not only a spiritual practice but also a way of reinforcing faith and maintaining a deep connection with the divine.
