Garud Puja Samagri: Essential Items for Invoking the Divine Blessings of Garuda

Garud Puja is a sacred ritual performed to honor Garuda, the divine bird and the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Garuda is considered a symbol of strength, speed, and wisdom, and the puja is believed to bring blessings for the removal of obstacles, protection from evil, and the attainment of spiritual progress. Garud Puja is often performed to overcome troubles, safeguard oneself from negative forces, and seek divine intervention for success and health. The Garud Puja samagri (ritual items) is carefully chosen to ensure the ritual is carried out with respect and devotion, invoking the divine presence of Garuda to bestow blessings on the worshipers.

The essential items for Garud Puja include the Puja Thali, which serves as the base for all offerings. The idol or image of Garuda is the central focus of the ritual. It is usually placed on the altar or a clean platform. Incense sticks (agarbattis) are lit during the puja to purify the space and create a serene atmosphere conducive to spiritual energy. A diya (lamp) is also essential, symbolizing the light of knowledge and removing darkness and ignorance from the worshiper’s life.

Roli and chawal (rice) are used to offer prayers and to apply a tilak on the forehead of the worshiper or the idol of Garuda. This symbolizes protection and good fortune. Flowers, especially marigolds, are used to adorn the idol of Garuda, as flowers represent purity, beauty, and devotion in Hindu rituals. Fruits are offered as a symbol of nature’s abundance and blessings, and they are placed near the idol during the puja.

Another important element is sweets, such as laddus or barfis, which are offered as prashad after the puja and shared among family members or devotees as a sign of divine blessings. Water is also used for purification and as an offering to the deity. Kumkum or sindoor may be applied to the forehead or to the deity’s idol to signify auspiciousness.

For chanting and prayers, Garud Ashtakshara Mantra or Garud Stotra is recited, invoking Garuda’s protection and strength. Rice grains are scattered around the altar to enhance the sanctity of the space, and betel leaves or betel nuts are offered to signify respect and reverence.

All these items together help create a sacred environment for Garud Puja, attracting divine blessings for protection, health, wealth, and spiritual growth, and ensuring a smooth and prosperous journey ahead.
